Hazard Communication (HAZCOM), or the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS 29 CFR 1910.1200), is a mandatory, "right-to-know" safety regulation requiring employers to identify, label, and communicate workplace chemical hazards. It ensures workers understand risks through Safety Data Sheets (SDS), proper container labeling, and training to prevent injuries, illnesses, and chemical accidents.

Frequently asked question

The goal of the Hazard Communication Program (also known as HazCom) is to protect people from injuries and illnesses associated with using hazardous chemicals in the workplace. People have the right-to-know and understand the hazards and identities of the chemicals they are exposed to at work.

The speakers cover the criteria for what constitutes a hazardous chemical and outline the five key elements of the Hazard Communication Standard: (1) identification, (2) labeling, (3) safety data sheets, (4) employee training, and (5) program implementation.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS): The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products.
